Winemaker's Notes
Arrowood 2003 Syrah is a gorgeous wine. It is very complex, very rich, very gutsy, and very, very good! This wine is a blend of Syrah grapes from three different vineyards in Sonoma Valley that compliment. Although the vineyard sites are located in the Sonoma Valley viticultural area, the terroir, the total natural environment, of each site is distinctly different, producing the same grape variety, but each with different flavor profiles.
We have named our 2003 Sonoma Valley Syrah Le Beau Mélange which means The Beautiful Blend. We feel this is a suitable nomenclature because the wine is just that-beautiful! Reflecting Syrah's exotic character, butcher block delicatessen and smoke meats, anisette, licorice and campfire smoke aromatics introduce your palate to flavors of spicy smoked meat and venison. This well-balanced Syrah is a powerful one, so much so that the mouthfeel is almost viscous. It will complement equally weighty foods such as rack of lamb, aged, flavorful cheeses, pot roast or heavy red sauces on pasta.
Not for the faint of heart, our Sonoma Valley Syrah should age very well and quite gracefully over the next few years. To preserve its natural flavor and character and in keeping with our non interventional winemaking practices, we chose not to fine or filter this Syrah.
