Tasting Notes
Saralee's Vineyard is Richard's preferred source for Pinot Blanc in Sonoma. The cool climate of this Russian River property brings out the best qualities of this lesser-known grape. That wine's natural structure lifts the aromatics and balances the thick texture inherent in Pinot Blanc. Our 2006 is lush, creamy, nutty and dense with hints of lime blossom and vanilla.
About The Wine
Pinot Blanc thrives in many countries and goes by many names. In Alsace, it's often called Klevner or Clevener. The Germans call it Rulander and Weissburgunder. In Hungary it's Feherburgundi. And the Czechoslovakians refer to it as Rouci Bile.
Today we realize Pinot Blanc is actually a mutation of Pinot Noir, but until the late 19th century, most wineries mistakenly thought the grape was related to Chardonnay. To further confuse the picture, until recently the California wine industry had mistakenly identified the lesser Melon de Bourgogne grape as Pinot Blanc.
One of the most distinguishing characteristics of Pinot Blanc is its viscosity. The wine is rich, lavish and mouth-coating. A longtime fan of the grape, Richard Arrowood has been producing Pinot Blanc - true Pinot Blanc - from Saralee's Vineyard since 1992.
