Tasting Notes
Our 2005 Sonoma County Merlot is properly dark with an overt bouquet offering cherries, cassis, leather, plums and toasty oak. The texture is rich and luscious, the tannins are supple and smooth; the finish is long and intense. As with all fine Merlots, this wine drinks beautifully in its adolescence, but should age gracefully over the next decade.
About The Wine
For years, the California wine industry painted Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with the same broad brush. The two grapes were often planted in adjacent blocks and vinified using identical techniques. But over the last two decades we've discovered Merlot prefers a more moderate climate than its Bordelaise counterpart. Our Arrowood Estate Vineyard in Sonoma Valley - the source of our 2005 Merlot is the perfect locale for Merlot. Cooler than central Napa and warmer than western Sonoma, it offers the mild conditions needed to produce deep, luscious, complex Merlot.
Our Estate is located at the winery in the morning shadow of the Mayacamas Mountain Range. It has been organically farmed since 2004 and was officially certified organic in 2006. We have long believed in the benefits of organic farming. It is gentle on the environment and the people who work amongst the vines. We also find the wines from organically-farmed sites to be especially vibrant, balanced and expressive. In our experience, the best way to reveal the essential terroir of a piece of land is through natural organic farming techniques.
Arrowood's viticultural program was developed with the help of Phil Coturri, our managing vineyard consultant. Phil has farmed in the Sonoma Valley using organic techniques for more than 25 years.
