Tasting Notes
This year's Malbec is dark, ripe, berry-like and juicy. The nose explodes with raspberries, blueberries, vanilla, leather and plums. The texture is rich, balanced and supported by polished tannins. This is a Malbec with a strong, but never overbearing presence. It drinks beautifully now and should continue to improve over the next five to 10 years.
About The Wine
When we originally planted Malbec, it was viewed more as a blender than a stand-alone variety. The grape was there to add an extra dimension to our Cabernet Sauvignon. That's how it was traditionally utilized in both Bordeaux and California. And then we tasted the wine and fell in love with its intensity and powerful fruit aromas. It's hard to imagine any red wine being more satisfying and approachable than really great Malbec.
Our 2005 Malbec comes from our Arrowood Estate in the Sonoma Valley. The vineyard has been organically farmed since 2004 and was officially certified organic in 2006. We have long believed in the benefits of organic farming. It is gentle on the environment and the people who work amongst the vines. We also find the wines from organically-farmed sites to be especially vibrant, balanced and expressive. In our experience, the best way to reveal the essential terroir of a piece of land is through natural, organic farming techniques.
