Winemaker's Notes

The Monte Rosso vineyard plays an important role in California’s vinous history. This spectacular property, set more than 1000 feet above sea level at the southwestern end of the Mayacamas Mountain range, was first planted back in the 1880’s. It was purchased by Louis Martini in 1938 and continues to produce legendary wines from its rugged slopes.

The property consists of 575 acres, 231 of which are planted to vines. The vineyard takes its name from the red soils composed of loam, volcanic ash and iron deposits. Sitting above the fog that often covers the valley floor, Monte Rosso gains extra hours of sunlight throughout the growing season. The mountain conditions also tend to limit yields allowing the grapes to reach physiological maturity at moderate sugar levels.

While our 2004 Monte Rosso possesses the intensity and rich tannin structure of a mountain Cabernet, it also offers the grace and suppleness more commonly associated with a benchland site. The color is appropriately dark. The nose is a smorgasbord of cassis, earth, leather, blackberries, anise and toasty oak. Big, well-proportioned and structured, this wine is offers a birds-eye view of the soils and climate of this legendary vineyard.
